“Whenever Takes You Home”

As I sat with the idea of making my way home to myself, I felt called to observe Ramadan for the first time in my life, to be in solidarity with the people of Palestine. I grew up Catholic and stopped practicing religion when I was 18. I didn’t realize how profound my Ramadan experience would be. I had nothing to hide behind. I couldn’t eat or drink for the entire day. No weed or caffeine. I was alone, truly alone with my thoughts. Two days in I felt the impact of my decision to be face to face with myself. Shame. The shame I felt for being Asian in a predominately white town. I dove into connecting with my Filipino Ancestors. The land, the water, the richness of the people. Through my research, I have begun the lifelong journey of dismantling the shame I once felt. This art piece has been a portal to nourish my soul and guide me to the never-ending journey back to myself. Salamat po.
